Popular Antidepressants Linked to GI Bleeding

SSRIs may be associated with bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, when taken with painkillers called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

More people who had GI bleeding were taking SSRIs, 1.1 percent of patients with GI bleeding were taking Effexor (venlafaxine, an antidepressant related to SSRIs)

SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed psychotropic drug in the U.S.

The findings were published in the July issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.
